Working Without Windows Explorer

I came into work this morning and my machine booted up without IE or Firefox working. I reinstalled Firefox and it worked, but I could not get IE to work. On top of that, Windows Explorer doesn’t work so I can’t open a view of my disks.

Luckily I can still run CMD and my DOS heritage has paid off. I’ve been doing things like DIR, COPY and DEL all day.

I don’t want to call the help desk, because that would be an admition of defeat. I have to get IE back before I do my timesheets, though, because the program doesn’t work in Firefox.

    Get IE running again yet?

If it’s IE8, uninstall it from control panel and reboot. Should give you IE6. Then download and reinstall IE8.

I cleanup the install packages regularly to save disk space. I uninstalled IE8, but it did not revert service pack 2. IE8 still crashed.

It turned out to be a bad install of the Adobe reader software. I had two installs and it crashed IE8 and when IE8 crashed explorer.exe couldn’t load.

I ran IE8 with plugins disabled (from control panel/ administrative tools). It worked so I disabled all the plugins and started restarting them until it stopped working. I uninstalled the Adobe viewer and then re-installed it. I have been OK ever since.
