Space.com has a poll asking the question “What is the most important Sci-Fi story ever told?” and the only options are two TV shows and a movie. I’m sorry, but Star Wars has little to do with Sci-Fi other than having space ships and ray guns, and Star Trek, as much fun as it is, is hardly the best story ever told.
They include Dr. Who, which is a children’s show about evil robots and a clever man, but again, not the best stories in the world. I love Dr. Who, but best story? I am very sure it is not.
The best stories are written. Starting with Verne and Wells. Heinlein, Asimov, and Clarke, may claim most important. I am a William Gibson fan and I would nominate Neuromancer as the story most important to me.
If you count all of Speculative Fiction and not just Sci-Fi, then Lord of the Rings should be at the top.
The editor who came up with this idea was really asking What is the most important TV/Movie Franchise?
