Gruff Behind Bars

Gruff, the stray cat that lives in our basement, was injured in a fight. His leg was terrible damaged and very infected. The vet thought that he might have even lost the leg if it had not been treated in time.

We have never brought old Gruff to the vet before. He did not try to kill anybody, even though he has tried to kill me. In the last few years he has calmed down quite a bit and has become pretty snuggly.

He fights with our cats and marks his territory so he can’t be allowed to wander the house. The wound is stitched and has a drain for the infection so he can’t go outside. We compromise by letting him stay in an old dog cage we bought at garage sale. Needless to say he doesn’t like it and I don’t know how we will handle his bathroom issues.

For now he sits in the box and glares at us. I think, though that he likes being in the living room with the people and the other cats. He is rather handsome.

He probably thinks he is in cat jail and doesn’t undertand why….

He stayed the night in the upstairs bathroom. He used the cat box, so some time in his life he was litter trained.

The only problem is that he meowed all night. At 4:30 in the morning it got so bad that I took him out to the garden (fenced in as of yesterday). I sat in a lawn chair and let him roam free. He only wanted to sit in my lap.

He’s back in the bay window in his cage, now. He is crying, but we can’t let him out while his wound still has the drain in it.

If you get him fixed, wont he stop marking?

He’s fixed. He learned to be a Tom Cat and mark his territory, so he did not forget after he was fixed. He is aggressive towards our cats and can scratch if you move too fast. He has been fixed for about a year, but it was done too late.

Buy the Book!

I cleaned up my tab for Sonny Boy's Help Me and made it into a short book. There's a Kindle version for 99 cents, and if you buy the paperback you get the Kindle free.

I started reading Science Fiction in the 1950s. I started Writing SF in the 1960s. Then, I had a life. Now I am retired, raising chickens and keeping bees. I am still an avid reader and I have sold about 70 stories in the last 20 years.
I have been collecting information about writing Science Fiction for many years now. Social media has replaced the Blog and large dedicated websites, so the pages here are mostly static. I update them from time to time.
