Book sales

I received a good review in Amazing Stories Magazine for Frogs in Aspic and yesterday I finally sold the first copy of the book. The title explains everything. There is no hook to it, so people don’t buy it. The stories are more personal and go back to my early influences in SF and Fantasy. I don’t think that it is blockbuster material.

All in all, February was bad and March is working out to be just as bad. I stopped pushing the book in my plugins and the purchases just stopped. I just finished my taxes and recorded about $500 in sales for 2012. I don’t expect there to anything like that this year.

I have several books pretty much ready to publish, but it seems a total waste of time.

I subscribe to the feed I have created of Free Kindle Science Fiction Books, and I realize that there are litterally hundreds of thousands of SF books out there. Everyone who has ever written a bad SF book is published on Kindle. I can’t write a book that stands out. I downloaded a few books that looked that they might be good and believe me, they are very very bad. They make your eyes bleed.

I think you should write a screen play or a “treatment” that can be turned into something on TV. There are lots of old trekkies like me that always give a new sci-fi show a shot. If anything the newer ones target too young of a group, so I think there is a market for boomer sci-fi.

I have three screenplays outlined. One is a Sci-Fi blockbuster type, one is a ghost story and one a romantic comedy.

A screenplay is about 100 pages, but with lots of space so it comes out to about 10,000 to 15,000 words and I could knock off one in a couple of weeks, easily. Perhaps when things settle down, I can write again. For now, there is too much tension because of the job stuff.

I need time to work on my PHP code because I get a couple of hundred a month on that. My websites need attention to get their revenue back, too. Writing, that makes little or no money, is low on my list right now. I find myself thinking about it more and more, though. One of these days I’ll have to finish a story.

  3. Hi there, I would like to thank you for developing the pluggin Open in new window and share for free. If there is anything i could do in return just ler me know. I also have books on kindle but all of them are technical. Have not tried yet to write something more personal, but I do have the desire to at times. Wish you all the best and much success with your projects.
