I’ve been reading George Orwell’s diaries. There is lots of fascinating political commentary as well as how many eggs his chicken’s produced. I find it fun to read what happened 70 years ago on this day.

On September 1, 1939 Orwell wrote:

Invasion of Poland began this morning. Warsaw bombed. General mobilization proclaimed in England, ditto in France plus martial law.
