Why I Hate Disco

I came of age in the late 1960s. I listened to the birth of hard rock on vinyl records with phonographs I made myself out of old TV sets. I learned to play guitar and I grew my hair long. We were on the verge of something great in those days, and we had the power of the music behind us.

Then in the early seventies it was all lost. It was replaced by the God-Awful elevator music called Disco. Disco killed everything. It sucked the life out of a generation.

Here is an example of why I hate disco:

We come from the same era Keith and you know what? I kind of like Disco, even though I'd never would have admitted it back in 1973. I was more into Glam, Punk and later New Wave in the 1970's. I liked this clip and the music is great even though the coreography of the dancers are kind of cheesy.

Music as you know reflects the pulse of the street, whether its Rap, Hip hop Disco, its all good. Dont hate-apreciate.

Disco? No bad music? Cause it reflects the “pulse of the street?”

There’s plenty of bad music. I’m willing to accept that it comes from a variety of bad impulses and actions, not just of “the street” but also from COMMERCE…our well engineered, well greased with money profit making societal machinery. Music, and what gets called music without being music at all, comes from many sources.

I well remember the onslaught of DISCO, which was wildly grabbed up by many of those who also embraced anything else that shorted out their brains while engaging their genitals etc. This anti-consciousness mega loud assault allied well with the worst kinds of drug abuse, including especially the abuse of alcohol and cigarettes.

I don’t think it brought on the collapse of the positive energy of the 60’s and 70’s so much as it reflected that collapse.

Resistance to the Empire’s wars took a heavy toll. As too did the irrational and even psychotic fixations, to include the desperate escapism. Especially the detachment from continued political action…that was and is disastrous.

I remember seeing “DISCO SUCKS” bumper stickers all over the place during the Disco period. Disco? We would have been better off without it, but it or something just as grandly disgusting was sure to arrive way back when. Indeed, other lousy to purely shitty musical forms came along afterwards, all reflecting something and/or some things very ugly in our own society. If you can’t identify several such elements in our current society you are obviously not paying anything like enough attention to it.

    Bad art…for bad people.
