Jason Ricci

Friday Night I went down to see Jason Ricci play. He is a punk rocker who plays harmonica and does some blues. He is a unique player that does stuff nobody else can do. He is currently at the cutting edge of harmonica using techniques that are impossible to most of us. Here is a very short clip from the end of one of his songs. I can tell you that the notes he is playing don’t exist on my harps. It sounds like simple arpeggios, but it if you know harp there are two notes there that can only be played if you have a strangely shaped tongue, and a devious mind.

It’s not Fur Elise, but it is something out in space. And you definitely can’t play it on any harmonica that I have. Check out the clip of another song on my site jt30.com

Nice playing. There’s some rumbling in the music. Did you record this off a cell phone? It’s pretty good quality if you did.

I used my RCA small wonder EZ201. It is a little digital video camera that can take an SD memory card. It has its problems, one of them is that it uses some odd codec to record and the audio uses a european standard so that the audio and video don’t match well and you get rumbles in the audio and artifacts in the video.

The next version of the small wonder, the EZ205 is available for about $80. I expect that they fixed the problems.

In spite of the problems, the unit takes good pictures in the daytime. If you upload to youtube or vimeo most of the problems go away and they come out well. I am considering buying the newer version. I don’t really take that many videos, though.

The EZ201 goes for around $50 on eBay, new in the box.
