Jim Shannon – Missing in Action

Jim’s last blog entry, July 9, was about his computer acting up on him. It showed the classic symptoms of terminal hard disk failure. He mentioned that he might be able to get online at an internet cafe.

If there is anything I’ve learned in more than 35 years of programming; you must always act confident around computers. They are like Doberman Pinschers – they can smell fear and the always go for the throat.

Jim was over 100K words into his novel. I hope he had a backup!

I am attempting to send out positive waves right now to get his PC in line.

I expect Jim will go for a new PC. He was talking about an Apple laptop, which is very expensive. I use an Apple in my Web Page Design course and I did not have much difficulty with the shift of paradigm, at least as far as casual use goes. He can configure the old disk as a slave, install it as an E: drive, and try to recover as much information as he can off of it.

    hehehe,

By this time you’ve no doubt have seen my recent Blog. I’m back. The Geeks told me this evening that I had a conflict between the Nvida video card and the interlaced video of my W98 machine. The first thing that the blank screen displayed was Nvidea but it didn’t stay long enough for me to read it, then Setup then scandisk and Set up. Occasionally, very rarely would Scandisk get to my desk top only to give me about 2 min worth of desktop goodness only to go blank on me again. Then the Nvida screen and then Setup scandisk etc. Over and over again. Surely this can’tbe good for my harddrive. So the Geeks gave me the prognosis. They cleaned it all up for me and I’m settling my account with them and they are bringing it over to my place Wednesday before work. I hope. They managed to save all my data. Whew!

in the meantime I went and reformated my Xp computer and even though I lost all of the data I at least got the computer back to factory default settings so I have a computer use until the W98 machine comes back.

The bill to me is $79 which is a pretty good deal.

I also had problem getting my username to my own website hence I forgot to write this down. Even my email was down as Outlook wouldn’t recognize my Xp product key on this machine. I had to hunt down my Web guy at Geeklog and open up a Gmail account.

So now when I get my W98 computer back Wednesday, I’ll have 2 computers in operation and I can get back to the first rewrite of that novel.

Thanks for sending me the positive waves. In light of last Friday the 13th they certainly helped.

    Were back.
