February 19th, 2009 Dreams With Sharp Teeth Harlan Ellison is a total asshole. He’s also a good writer. I’ve got the first part down pat, although I don’t think I’ll ever be a good writer.    Actually, I kind of like him. He’s sharp, abrasive and makes no appologies. Somedays I wish I could be like that. He still uses a typewriter to write. I didn’t like the comment about Republicans though.

   Ellison is not a good enough writer to justify being a total asshole.

   Being a good writer and being an asshole are independent of each other. Being a good writer does nothing towards justifying his a-hole-ness. Being an asshole does not help him be a better writer.

   He is a damn good writer, although not as good as he thinks he is.
