Central Nyack convenience store robbery

Larry tells me that the police are looking for one of the kids that hangs around his house in Central Nyack. Larry fixes junk bikes up for neighborhood kids and one of the kids is one of the robbers. I know him. He is there a lot. Larry gives him jobs to do, like mow the lawn. He’s really really dumb, and would have guessed that he might wind up in a life of crime.

According to Larry the video at the store clearly shows him, in spite of the mask. Larry talked to the convenience store owner and he knows the kid, although he didn’t know his name. The kid would buy stuff there with the other robber – an older kid. His mother has some relationship with the police force, so they didn’t release the name on the web site.

CENTRAL NYACK – Clarkstown police today were looking for two men who robbed a Waldron Avenue convenience store at gunpoint last night.
The men entered Nyack Food Mart at 11 p.m. and demanded money from the clerk, police said.
One of the men held a handgun, police said.
The clerk gave the men money from the cash register. The men left the store.
One man wore a red and black ski mask, while the other wore a white Halloween-type mask, police said.

I bought Larry a Halloween mask last month. He likes to wear them and scare the local kids. I wonder what happened to it?

I can’t recall the last time I was in a convenience store at night. I refuse to go in them after dark anymore because they’re an easy target for robbery. The Petro Canada’s here are ok they get a lot of traffic and have a lot of staff on duty.

I hope the store owner is ok. He could have easily been killed. Does it get hit on often?

The gas station on the corner was hit twice by the same person in October. He was caught. The convenience store is run by two Sikhs and they are behind bullet proof glass. They gave up the money when they saw the gun. They were probably not in danger. They get hit once every year or two that I have heard.

The problem is that there is low income housing up on the hill and there is some drug activity there.

The police have been running undercover operations to clean up the drug traffic. My friend Eric is in a band and their drummer was caught in one of the sweeps. Eric had to bail him out so they could play a gig.

In spite of all that, the crime rate is moderate in Central Nyack and not bad at all down in the village of Nyack (Central Nyack is not the center of Nyack, but is a neighborhood about 2 miles to the west of the village of Nyack. I live in West Nyack, which is another couple of miles to the west. More information than you needed to know.)

Good to know they have bullet proof glass.

This year we logged in our 28th murder. That’s not bad when you consider a City like Dallas has about 180 murders/year. In 1967 they had something like 197 that year. Their highest ever but back then people left their front doors unlocked as well.

I recall in the early 1960’s we used to have milk delivered to the house, everybody in the neighborhood did. Overnight once/week mom would put the glass milk containers on the front porch with money for the milkman to pick up even before dad left for work.

You can’t do that anymore these days. I remember delivering the Edmonton Journal as (an adult carrier) back in 1982 in the afternoon. The journal went mornings in 1984.

Times sure are changing hey Keith?

    Hey Keith,

Convenience stores–I haven’t been inside one in years.

going through old newspapers I am shocked (not really…) at some things that went on locally in … say 1900 . Crimes then were similar to today’s crimes.
( robbers stabbing people who won’t hand over cash, crazed man with rifle on the loose, kidnapped girl found, that sort of thing ) Of course media coverage was not as thorough then, so a lot of stories were just not reported. I do enjoy the old fashioned wording of these tragic stories, though.
