Vistas and Ice Cream

Erica and I set off from rte. 15 to rte. 94, which took us north and then east on our way home.

On the way home I took some pictures of a view of the Wawayonda (neat name) valley.

Erica pointed out that the barn I was standing next to had lightening rods on the roof, right out of Bradbury’s Something Wicked This Way Comes.

Then, on the way towards Warwick and rte. 17a, we stopped for Ice cream. This part of north Jersey is very rural and there are lots of Dairies. Sometimes you can smell a dairy a half a mile away.

The Ice Cream store shop was out in the middle of nowhere and was still crowded. I am used to the thin anemic ice cream that you get at grocery stores. This was incredibly rich and made from local fresh cream.

This was the view of the Warwick valley from the back yard of the ice cream store.

Nice photo’s. Your area kind of reminds me of Strathford Ontario. Not that I’ve ever been there.

Youv’e got some beutiful country there Keith.

If you check out Dennis Hurd’s blog at the bottom of my links section he’s got some Sunday pics as well of Columbia Street’s New Westminster (where I used to live about 30 years ago)Classic car show.

Dennis is in our age group transplanted from New England.

BTW, I seem to recall an ancidote of yours how you actually sat with JWC on a plane ride.

I sat with JWC on a flight from San Francisco to New York in 1965 when I was 14. My Uncle, a Colonel in the Army, had paid my way for a summer with him in Hawaii. On the way back there was an airline strike and I was stuck for a few days in the SF airport. I spent all of my spare cash on books, mostly by Andre Norton.
I was given a seat in first class next to Campbell who noticed the books. He told me who he was (I didn’t know that he edited Analog until later). I told him I was reading a book a day and that I had over 500 books in my collection. He told me that he had a bathroom piled high with thousands of books. (A great and convenient concept!) He gave me some books from his briefcase – I remember Clifford Simak’s “City” (stolen a few years later when my apartment in NYC was cleaned out by one of the room mates).

I loved “City.” Simak is my fav author of all time. His last book “Highway to Eternity” is a classic.

I’m lucky if I can read a book every 2 weeks. Pandora’s Star took me three and a half months! It’s that big.

Pretty nice of Campbell to give you a copy of “City.” Do you still read a book a day?

I am lucky if I finish three or four books a month. I have been getting all of my reading done lately with audio books. It allows me to make use of my commute time. I spend many hours each week in the truck and I have a supply of books on tape or books on iPod always ready. Audio Books are from 10 to 20 hours on average.

Audio is a wonderful way to read, but it takes much longer to finish a book.

Today is the first time that I have been doing any hard book reading in many months. 30 pages this morning (the bus was quick). The book is over 300 pages so I expect it will take a week.
