We bought our large screen LCD Tv last month and love it. 42" is a big screen. The only trouble with HDTV is not everything is in HD at this time. Our Service provider is as about high end as they get here in Edmonton and can compete with any service out there but they confirmed that there are only a few channels availble that are in the HD format.
This is why we're not going to get a HD cable box just yet. You can watch all current TV on these large screen TV's. We're still tinkering around with the color and contrast but otherwise the TV we got from Walmart (Sanyo) is just great.
my wife and I are considered low income but if we can afford an HDTV anyone can. Besides, you can always go to a Rent to own shop and RTO a large screen TV. They'll come in and transport it and set up in your home. We have "Easy Home" here and they have the LCD for something like $10/week. Try before you buy. You might find the wide screen TV's not to your pallet.
LCD or Plasma? I think the picture quality is better on the Plasma's but if your going to be playing video games or if you watch a lot of TV the Plasma could burn you in the pocket book. LCD's are fragile. Be very carefull how you set these things up and don't use windex or anything like that on the LCD screens, you'll ruin the TV. Keep the LCD TV's away from kids reach. A thousand bucks is a lot of cash to shell out when a kid trips holding a popsicle and it collides with the TV. By by TV.
42 inches is nice chunk of electronics. I make well over 100K per year and I still don't think I can afford one. Of course, Dad didn't buy a color TV until well into the 1970s because they were so expensive and B&W was good enough.
The first time that I watched a show in color was when I was dating Erica in 1969 and her father invited me to watch Star Trek - in color! That's when I knew I was in love.
