The temperature was 7 degrees when I got up this morning. (That’s about -14 C to some of you).
I am happy to say that the new high efficiency furnace that I installed myself kept the house nice and warm despite the cat door in the basement that lets in cold air. (That cat door has to cost me a couple of hundred dollars a year in heating costs.)
During the day and early evening, we keep a fire going in the woodstove that warms the downstairs living areas. We are about halfway through the woodpile and I may need another cord before the weather warms up.

Two weeks ago, that was our high!
It’s been a crazy winter here. By this time next week, we could reach our average seasonal snowfall total…and we still have to get through March, which is traditionally our snowiest month.
I knew it was cold two weeks ago when my cat, who normally curls up next to me at night, insisted on being under the covers!
New York has pretty good weather usually. Even though we get some cold days in the winter and hot days in the summer, the extremes are not that frequent or extreme. I like a snowy winter and a balmy summer. It seems right that we get lows in the 20s in January, but below 10 with a strong wind is very unpleasant.
I will not be moving to Florida, though. I like my weather. I am planning to buy a retirement home in Maine any year now. I had the chance to buy Longfellow’s summer house in Maine, it even had a cottage where he wrote some of his stories and poems. It went cheap, but no quite in my budget. The sale price was about $200,000. Houses are cheap down east and the weather isn’t much worse than down here in New York.
Once I get a house in Maine, I can start moving books and amplifiers north and in 5 or 10 years make the trek with a pack of cats and not come back. Snow and cold won’t be that bad if I can stay home by the fire and work on a novel.
I plan to teach Stephen King to play my brand of poker once I get settled in house in his neck of the woods.
Our high today was -18C, I don’t mind the temperature it’s the wind chill thats the big evil to us Edmontonians.
When you get a week of -25C -14C seems almost balmy :-)
