Coyote Wild reports
I've had a story at Coyote Wild for 27 days. I received an update from them.
This is one of those no news updates regarding your recent submission to Coyote Wild. We have finished reviewing all of the submissions received during our last reading period and are happy to report that ‚"A Nest of Flames" has been advanced to the second round.There were a number of rejections and a few of these notices on Speculations. Jean Graham (no relation that I know of) is also waiting on the second round decision. My story is one that I've discussed here before. It is a marginally spec-fic weird tale. It is set in in early 19th century London. I am skeptical that is a good fit at any zine, but I have my fingers crossed that the editors at Coyote Wild think outside of the box.
We should have a definitive response for you by November 15th. Thank you for your continued patience.

First, the story is too odd (two fire-eaters fall in love - heat of passion becomes an issue).
Second, they pay by the word and the story is 4800 words long - longish for a zine.
Third, from what I have heard, they have several really good people who have made the cut, too, and I would have to beat them out.
But... Justin Stanchfield just sold a story to Asimov's and a YA novel in the same week. He's damn good, but for the past few years he's been just another one of us shmucks, mostly selling to the $5 a story sites.
If Justin can break out, there is a possibility that the rest of might be able to do it - if we hunker down and really try to write the good stuff.

At the con this weekend, both James Van Pelt and Tony Ruggiero will be there...both are pros now, and both started out publishing with ProMart...which is the same place Tyree and I started...so, you never know!

PANIC! I had to go back and see what I wrote. I guess that I did I did not have my whole foot in my mouth, just a few toes.
I write in my own little genre, and it is not easy to convince anyone that my stuff is publishable. J and Tyree over at SamsDot have been very forgiving and I have seen my best stories there.
The secret to getting my stuff published is stick-to-it-tivity. I had a story accepted after 17 prior rejections.
I hope that Coyote Wild will accept the story, but I am expecting bad news. I have the next market all lined up.
