Good Weekend

Rather than go to flea markets, Erica and I took a road trip upstate and drove around in Ulster County. I put about 250 miles on the truck and we had a great time. We stopped at a winery, bought champaign, got lost, had lunch in a vintage diner, bought some fancy desserts in a quaint village and took the long way home. It was as close to a vacation that I’ve had in a very long time. I wish that I had brought a camera.
I finished Heinlein’s Door into Summer on tape, and I started right over again at the beginning.
I sold a story to J. Erwine at Martian Wave – thanks J! I finished another story, although it is not spec-fic, and I have no idea what to do about it.
I am nearing the end to Vinge’s Rainbows End – very good stuff – it’s giving me lots of ideas for stories.
Since there was no decent TV, Erica and I watched Tales of the Gold Monkey episodes the last two evenings. I bought the bootleg DVD set last year. This vintage TV series is lots of fun, but like the little girl with the curl on her forehead, when it’s bad it’s horrid. I still enjoyed it, especially watching the giant 8-ball atomic bomb with the swastika on it being dumped into the bottomless pit and Jack the Dog upstaging Roddy McDowall.
It was beautiful weather and Erica and I had good long talks and walks. It was a calming weekend and I hate having to go back to work so soon.

I just finished Vinge’s Marooned in Real Time…great read!!! It definitely generated some ideas for me as well, which was kind of funny because about two hours after finishing it, Tyree came to me with an idea for an anthology that he wants me to write a novella for…and it was right along the lines of the story ideas running around in my head! Synchronicity, I guess…

As far as thanking me for taking the story, all I had to do was read it…you wrote it, so thank you!

Vinge only writes a novel every 4 or 5 years and I look forward to them. The two Deepness novels were his best. Rainbow’s end is like a cross between rudy rucker and gibson. There is some silliness with a very serious undercurrent. The plot is being driven by a mysterious white rabbit and the lead character is an old guy who has been cured of alzheimers but still has a few holes in his head. Rucker’s idea of a singularity seems to be coming into play, but not as rucker talks about it.
There is an old vinge novel called Tasha Grimm or sometime’s Grimm’s World about a planet where there’s a 500 year old science fiction magazine published from a boat. The crew is composed of editors, writers and printers and they travel a strange world and have adventures with the beautiful and mysterious Tasha Grimm – I think you’d love it!
