I am a first year beekeeper in Minnesota and I purchased my bees(MN Hygienic) at Nature's Nectar 11108 Manning Trail North, Stillwater, MN 55082. Jim Kloek is the owner and is very helpful and knowledgeable. Here is phone number 651-439-8793. I know that we have to order our bees way early around the end of January.
Good luck,

Thanks for your journal. While I have had bees now for about eight or nine years, a move of residence has produced a most unexpected response. After a very cold and wet month, we noticed one of our two hives appeared to have few residents. A slightly better day has allowed us to inspect the hive to find that there is some activity and the hive may still be on-going. I had chosen to close the hive down, but leave extra frames accessible in the super above. I had assumed my location was perfect, and overlooked its posiition under a Wattle tree ( Acacia), which appears to have caused considerable dampness, as a result of our recent heavy and constant rainfall. Reading your page ( from last year, the result of my search), your comments have reminded me of much that I had forgotten, and that, perhaps, I should be attending the local apiarists association meetings', which I had not seen the need to do for several years, as we were living in the suburbs of Melbourne, a city of several million people. Now in a rural environment, just outside a town of 3000 people, I obviously have to reconsider much about my hobby.
Best wishes and thanks again

I was at that event Sunday. There was parking on the street (Brooklyn), and people to help you extract. And it was in a commercial, Kosher kitchen (I'm not sure of the details, but there are laws about food prepared for sale that are hard to certify in a home kitchen.) Sure there's gas and tolls, but how much did you spend trying to make your own extractor? Even if you only come down once later this year, you'll meet some good people. The leader of the meetup group seems to know everyone who's ever seen a bee in all 5 boroughs, and half of CT.

If it's too far for you to go, I understand.

If you know keepers in your area who have extractors, consider renting one for the day. If the others don't have extractors, you could buy one in common.

All that said, I'm going to build an extractor of my own. If I have any success, I'll let you know.

Too bad you are not sending out honey until Christmas...I have an old laptop and mini that I just replaced with newer models, but I dont think I'll be motivated to send you the old stuff until I get at least one small jar of the honey to sample.

I live in West Nyack, NY which is a suburb. A trip into NYC takes at least an hour each way and costs me gas, parking and tolls. I have not been into the city in years.
There are no Rockland County groups that I am aware of. I do know of 4 beeks within 5 miles, though, but none are in a position to loan out a an extractor.

Things are going well. I have put off my plans to split a hive in favor of just letting them do what they want. I got 2.75 gallons of honey and I am going to sell it. My wife made a sign for the driveway - the honey won't last long. I have 15 supers on 4 hives and they are filling fast. I may harvest in July. I may spring to buy an extractor since my do-it-yourself attempt went so badly.

I made a lotion out of beeswax and almond oil and I have orders for as many jars as I can make. I am thinking of buying beeswax in order to make more.

I am one year ahead of you and made all the same mistakes.

The honey gate is threaded with a nut, but it was plastic and I am not sure it would tighten down well. The side of the container that I used was curved and I was concerned about it making a good seal.

You might use some caulk to keep it from leaking and have it act like glue.
